The legendary German born photographer, Ilse Bing, gives special respect to the Leica camera in her self-portrait, as the Leica was the tool of her photographs, she positioned the camera, so that it is as prominent as her face.
This photograph of Oskar Barnack is one of a series of portraits which must all have been taken at the same time. Barnack is wearing the same outfit as on the wellknown picture taken at work by his assistant Julius Huisgen. There, the calendar on the wall indicates the date as March 19, 1934.
Oskar Barnack’s was an avid nature lover, he never wanted a car and prefered to walk, but Barnack's family finally convinced him to buy them a car. In his family photo albums, several images show this car. The number plate IT 88441 was issued by the county of Hessen-Nassau, which includes Wetzlar.
